We are proud to announce that Wartsila, a member of the SSI has been included in the STOXX Global ESG Leaders Index. The STOXX Global ESG Leaders index offers a representation of the leading global companies in terms of environmental, social and governance criteria. The index is made of the following three ESG sub-indices: the STOXX Global ESG Environmental Leaders, the STOXX Global ESG Social Leaders and the STOXX Global ESG Governance Leaders indices.

SSI calls on IMO and Member States to continue progress made at MEPC 70
Critical work must now be done to enable shipping industry to define the ‘level of ambition’ for emissions reduction
London – 31 October 2016 – The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (“SSI”), a pioneering coalition of companies from across the global shipping industry, today stated that it was cautiously optimistic following progress made at the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Marine Environmental Protection Committee meeting (MEPC 70). At the event, the IMO and member states set out a roadmap for developing a strategy to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from shipping by 2023, as called for by the SSI and other industry stakeholders. However, it is critical that significant work be conducted prior to MEPC 71 in May 2017 to ensure the momentum for change is maintained.
“The development of a GHG emissions reduction roadmap to 2023, and the adoption of an initial strategy with short, medium and long-term measures in 2018 is a positive step forwards for the shipping industry,” said Ian Petty, General Manager, the Sustainable Shipping Initiative.
“However, significant work still needs to be conducted to maintain momentum and enable the industry to agree on the level of ambition for emissions reduction.”
The SSI believes that further progress needs to be made in the build up to MEPC 71 in May 2017 and the IMO’s intercessional working group meeting on GHG emissions taking place during the preceding week. This includes a critical assessment of the future predicted demand for shipping in line with global economic growth, a detailed cost benefit analysis, as well as an understanding of current and future capabilities for emissions reduction, which will enable the IMO and member states to agree an appropriate ‘level of ambition’ and a fair playing field for the industry that will see shipping fairly and effectively contribute to achieving the below 2-degrees warming targets agreed at COP21 in December 2015.
The SSI also welcomes the integration of the IMO’s third GHG study (2012) with the MRV data collection scheme, and the provision for the development of a fourth GHG study from 2012 to 2018, which will bridge the gap on data analysis.
Based on research conducted with the University College of London’s Energy Institute, and in line with its own Roadmap to creating a sustainable industry, the SSI believes that average EEOI’s need to reduce by 80% on 2012 levels by 2050. This requires a reduction of between 25%-30% in emissions every decade from now until 2040.
Ian Petty concluded:
“We must be under no illusions that while defining a roadmap is progress, the challenge to reduce shipping’s impact on climate change remains significant. There can be no stalling or derailing of plans. The industry must now continue to work together with purpose and urgency to put in place the elements that will define its contribution to global emissions reduction, so that the real process for action and implementation can begin.”

SSI calls on IMO and member states to show urgent leadership
London – 13 October 2016 – The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (“SSI”), a pioneering coalition of companies from across the global shipping industry, today set out what it believes are the required immediate actions for creating a framework to reduce GHG emissions from shipping.
The announcement comes ahead of the landmark Marine Environmental Committee Meeting (MEPC 70, 24th – 28th October), where the SSI believes that the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and all organisations and member states represented at MEPC must demonstrate a commitment to the Paris Agreement’s objective of keeping global warming below two degrees. This can be achieved by adopting a detailed IMO roadmap for establishing shipping’s ‘fair share’ of global emission reductions to be decided on at MEPC 70.
IMO’s ‘fair share’ discussions should lead to the swift establishment of reduction targets, titled ‘Intended IMO Determined Contributions’, which should be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in order to align IMO’s work with that of the UNFCCC. Defining shipping’s ‘fair share’ of CO2 reductions must be balanced between the required ambition to deliver on the Paris Agreement, and the need to be equitable and affordable for the industry, as well as enforceable on a global basis to ensure change.
The SSI also believes that the baseline for setting emissions reduction targets should be founded upon data from the IMO’s third Greenhouse Gas (GHG) study (2014), and not linked to ongoing data collection and analysis from a global Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) scheme, which will only delay the urgent action that is required.
“Decarbonisation of the global economy is under way. We are now at a crossroads for the shipping industry where it must choose to embark on an accelerated innovation pathway to ensure its long term relevance as the backbone of global commerce,” said Ian Petty, General Manager, the Sustainable Shipping Initiative.
“The industry cannot achieve this alone through enhanced efficiency. It needs help from legislators to create a level global playing field, which will help incentivise the much-needed innovation in the industry. A minimum requirement at the forthcoming MEPC 70 meeting is to adopt a process to define shipping’s fair share of CO2 emissions reductions.”

SSI Roadmap to a sustainable shipping industry - 2016 version
The Roadmap was initially developed in 2016 as a way to provide an overview of the defining factors, milestones, and priorities needed to achieve a sustainable shipping industry. SSI members identified global challenges and trends expected to affect the industry, publishing the Roadmap as a call to action and kickstarting the debate on how the industry would respond.

SSI Celebrates World Maritime Day - 'Shipping Indispensable to the World'
Last week we celebrated World Maritime Day and its theme of ‘Shipping – Indispensable to the World’. For centuries, shipping has been a cornerstone of global trade, and without it the import and export of goods on the scale necessary to sustain the modern world would not be possible.
World trade’s most important conduit is ocean shipping. Without it much of the last century’s economic and social development would not have taken place, and it’s the foremost reason that we enjoy ready access to such a diverse array of low-cost goods. Put simply, the economies of scale, comparative low cost and environmental efficiencies enable trade that would not be practical with alternative means of transport.
The world fleet consists of over 89,000 merchant vessels (UNCTAD, 2015) which are registered in 150 nations, and they employ more than a million seafarers from almost every corner of the globe. This gives our sector an enormous opportunity to drive changes that can increase employment, prosperity and sustainability.
From NGOs and Ship-owners to Class Societies and Industry Bodies we all have a role to play. As a member-led organisation we understand the critical importance of working together with partners to help facilitate understanding and change in key areas, and by setting norms, raising global standards and investing in the responsible development of the blue economy we can further shipping’s progress towards sustainability.
We look forward to working with our members, as well as those within the industry who are committed to actively engaging and collaborating to drive change, and achieve our Vision of a sustainable shipping industry by 2040.

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative are proud to be a supporting organisation of The PartnerSHIP project.
The PartnerSHIP project is a global initiative aimed at creating awareness of the shipping industry by building, educating and fundraising via a virtual online ship. The virtual ship will combine all major merchant ship types as a unique generic design providing a platform to showcase the vast arrays of technologies available and used in today’s merchant fleet.
The two-year project will continuously develop providing a practical online tool for educating the next generation. Additionally, the project hopes to raise £1 million to support a variety of causes.
Currently the shipping industry is virtually invisible to the general public, even though 90% of goods are transported by ship. This lack of awareness has contributed to a decrease in the younger generation taking up maritime careers, especially in Engineering. This has been highlighted in the SSI’s Roadmap to 2040 and must be addressed by the industry.
By supporting projects like the PartnerSHIP we believe that we can take innovative steps to inspire younger generations and demonstrate the varying options and the innovative technologies that are used within the shipping industry.

Ballast Water Management Convention is a Step in the Right Direction
The recent ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) is welcomed by the Sustainable Shipping Initiative. The transport of alien species in ballast water is a major socio-economic and biodiversity threat, and we believe the adoption of the Convention is a positive step for the improvement of ocean health in coastal waters.
The recent controversies over national and regional approaches to the approval standards of the convention must however be resolved swiftly and not penalise owners who have been early adopters of treatment technologies which have met the requirements of the convention at the time.
Proactively contributing to the responsible governance of the oceans is a key part of our Vision to 2040, and our Roadmap and the ratification of the BWMC is a key milestone in reaching this goal.

SSI Delivers First Ever IWSA Wind Innovation Technology User Award to Enercon
The Sustainable Shipping Initiative was pleased to sponsor the International Wind Ship Association Wind Innovation Awards presented at the SMM conference in Hamburg on 8th September 2016.
The Technology User Award recognises companies that are championing the use of wind propulsion on their vessels, through testing, prototype operation and commercial use. Four very different contenders were nominated.
- Enercon for their E-ship 1,
- Bore Shipping for their use of Norsepower Rotors,
- Solar Sailor for the Rigid Opening Sail, and
- Fair Transport, with the Traditional Sail Cargo.
Each of these organizations is to be commended for the work they are doing and the commitment demonstrated by their willingness to try out new and innovative solutions however based upon a public vote Germany’s wind power specialists Enercon were the winners and it was a great pleasure for Mr Ian Petty, General Manager of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, to be present and to deliver the award certificate, and a fine bottle of Fair Trade Rum, in person to Dr Andreas Schmidt of Enercon.
It is through collaborative projects like these, and those being undertaken by the many energetic and enthusiastic members of the IWSA, that the development of new technology can be tested, funded and ultimately shown to work. Proving the viability of a new technology is a crucial step in overcoming market reluctance. Industry wide partnerships and coalitions, like the SSI, are taking practical steps to tackle some of the sector’s greatest opportunities and challenge and more effective problem solving happens when resources in talent, experience, finance and infrastructure are combined.
SSI’s own members have also been active in the search for technologies to harness the wind as part of an overall solution to the critical challenge faced by the shipping industry to reduce carbon emissions. With the IMO’s third GHG study predicting that CO2 emissions could increase by as much as 250% by 2050 it is unthinkable and totally unacceptable for shipping not to take responsibility for reducing its output and in so doing contribute to the global CO2 reduction targets outlined in COP21 at the UNFCCC conference in December last year.

AkzoNobel | Carbon Credits
AkzoNobel’s marine coatings business, International®, has developed the first carbon credits methodology for international shipping, which recognises and financially rewards shipowners for investing in clean technology.
Whilst shipping is the most efficient mode of transportation, the world fleet still emits around 950 million tonnes of CO2annually, equating to around 2.7% of global CO2emissions. In an industry where pressures to improve sustainability are central to competitiveness, profitability and compliance, ship-owners need to look at ways to increase operational and environmental efficiencies. Clean technology is an effective way of delivering this, however, the tough global economic climate, and lack of liquidity often makes it hard for ship-owners to justify the investment.

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative is pleased to be sponsoring two IWSA events at this years’ SMM Conference 2016 being held in Hamburg from 6th – 9th September.
