The global shipping industry together with its extended ecosystem of value chains, play an increasingly large role in the health of the world’s oceans, as well as having impact on multiple planetary boundaries. While the industry has set targets for its full decarbonisation, there is growing realisation that climate change is not the only planetary crisis which the industry must set targets for. There is a triple planetary crisis of biodiversity loss, pollution and climate change which will impact the industry long-term. Meanwhile, as the industry makes investments for a net-zero future, there is an opportunity to compare and align these solutions for positive biodiversity impact and reduced pollution, as synergies appear and have meaningful feasibility. The purpose of this guidebook is to deliver actionable insight to all relevant stakeholders of the shipping industry, using existing best practices, scientific evidence and analysis, emerging guidelines and policies. Gaps and opportunities for improvement are also identified, along with sharing of case examples across a wide set of biodiversity issues, to empower the industry towards positive impact and increased ocean health.
