About the SSI

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative is a multi-stakeholder collective in the maritime sector, who drive change in the maritime industry. SSI is industry-led, and our members span the shipping value chain, from shipowners and charterers to shipyards and ports, ship recyclers, banks, and non-profits.

SSI’s approach to sustainability is holistic and has six vision areas for action: Oceans, Communities, People, Transparency, Finance, and Energy (outlined in the Roadmap to a sustainable shipping industry).

SSI is looking for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who believes that a sustainable shipping sector is a crucial enabler of a sustainable global economy. In this role, the CEO will be responsible for delivering SSI’s goals, overseeing projects across the areas for action, attracting and onboarding suitable new members and partners. The CEO will act as a thought leader on sustainable shipping, creating change through leadership and vision.

We are an equal opportunities employer, and will consider applicants from any location. Remuneration will be commensurate with industry/sustainable charitable organisations’ norms,  experience, qualifications and location.

The role

The CEO will lead the day-to-day operations of the organisation, manage the Secretariat team to deliver the strategy, liaise with members, partner organisations, prospective members, and be the public face of the SSI to industry, government and NGO’s. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the tasks of the CEO will include:

Further development of SSI

  • Develop and execute new ideas to increase the impact of SSI’s work on the maritime sector and beyond.
  • Manage current and potential member and partner relations, working to identify and attract new members and partners whilst working closely with and retaining existing ones.
  • Identify, define, and execute project opportunities where SSI has the potential to create lasting impact.
  • Advance the development and implementation of a communication and influencing strategy that establishes SSI as a leader in shipping’s sustainability, builds industry awareness of developments and progress on sustainability challenges and opportunities, and inspires action, either independently or in concert with SSI.
  • Update and deploy a fundraising strategy that delivers additional and lasting core funding to enable impactful work from the SSI.

Be the face of SSI

  • Represent the SSI externally at conferences and events, both within and beyond shipping. (For example, Singapore Maritime Week, London International Shipping Week, Climate Week NYC, COP, and the Our Ocean Conference).
  • Elevate SSI’s outreach with external organisations and peers to drive collaboration, align actions and further build SSI’s reputation as a thought leader within the shipping and sustainability space.

Lead SSI internally

  • Lead the Secretariat, evaluating performance and identifying opportunities for further development, whilst fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Manage the finances, systems, and administration of the organisation, supported by outsourced professional service providers as needed. Report to Charity Commission and filing with Companies House, regards the annual accounts.
  • Be the Company Secretary (e.g. filing changes of directors/trustees etc.).
  • Report to the Board of Trustees, preparing all materials and board minutes, as Company Secretary.
  • Implement the Strategy, reporting to the board and members on progress and impact. The strategy calls for SSI to act as a catalyst for a sustainable and successful shipping industry in this crucial decade of action.
  • Plan and run two in-person meetings per year plus 4-5 virtual member meetings per year.

  • Senior Leadership roles in an international multi-stakeholder organisation or corporate
  • A collaborative, driven, open, inclusive and strategic leader
  • Shipping and/or Sustainability background, or an understanding of sustainability issues for transport, construction or similar sectors.
  • Confident communicator with excellent command of spoken and written English (as the international maritime language)
  • Prior experience with stakeholder engagement and public-facing roles. You are a confident communicator and public speaker, comfortable at high-level events.
  • Prior experience with developing and facilitating collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders, inspiring those stakeholders to engage, contribute and act
  • Prior experience with project and programme management, budgets, and financial reporting.
  • The SSI team is small but global with prior and current secretariat spread across India and Europe and members ranging from Canada to Singapore. We are looking for someone that has experience leading and working across different cultures and backgrounds, and who is passionate about helping the team grow and develop.
  • Travel is expected for the following: member meetings (2x per year in person), event participation, periodic in-person team meetings (though we try to plan these at the same time as a member meeting or other event).

  • Education or professional background in industrial sustainability, ESG, and (if relevant) the ability and motivation to learn about the shipping industry
  • Experience in systems, or futures thinking, foresight and/or horizon scanning
  • Experience in designing and executing successful implementation of project portfolios, outreach and driving the realisation of intended outcomes.
  • Experience in defining, coordinating and facilitating the work of a multi-stakeholder organisation of differing perspectives and positions.
  • Inspiring and mobilising others to engage in shared purpose

Skills and interests

  • An understanding of multi-stakeholder and non-governmental organisation landscapes, and engagement with and across industry
  • Interest in guiding and coaching to develop and build competencies.
  • Interest in public-private partnerships and multi-stakeholder initiatives
  • Skills and motivation to build, develop and facilitate collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Interest in and a nuanced understanding of sustainability issues and how market forces can address/shape these
  • The day-to-day work is remote and requires a high level of literacy in online collaborative tools. We use Slack, Dropbox and MS Office daily.

Location – Remote

The SSI is a global membership organisation.  While the base has historically been in London, team members are, like SSI members, located in various locations and generally work remotely.  Therefore the location of the CEO role is also flexible and the Board are able to consider the role being carried out from any suitable place where reliable communications are available, but a maritime hub/cluster would be preferred.  As the role will also require international travel, the location should permit this with no significant travel constraints.
