Blog on SSI events in Athens
Last week the Sustainable Shipping Initiative was proud to be hosted in Athens by Tsakos Energy Navigation. With well over 2000 years of shipping heritage, Greece is a major epicentre of the industry, and represents an important ally in the drive for a sustainable industry.
Meeting on SSI’s third anniversary the 21 members from 14 countries were gathered to report on their collaborative work streams and individual activities, and how these were contributing to their Vision2040. We were also there to look ahead to 2014, and determine our priorities for the next phase of the SSI. This is a challenging phase of the project, with the members working on a number of practical projects. We’ll be making a full report on our achievements and at our major event in Singapore this September, on World Maritime Day.
A keynote speech was delivered by Mr. Efthimios E. Mitroloulos, former Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation. We were also joined at the meeting by Knowledge Partners Hewlett Packard, UCL, and Deloitte, who have been making extremely valuable contributions to the SSI.
The meeting concluded with a cocktail reception hosted by Deloitte, where the Greek shipping community came to hear about the SSI’s Save as you Sail finance model. We couldn’t help but notice the sharp intakes of breath around the room as Deloitte’s finance model indicated impressive double digit returns on investment - a compelling case that sustainability makes sound business sense!
Last but not least - we were delighted to welcome new member Namura Shipbuilding to the meeting, and to introduce new recruit Carolyne Okeijn. Carolyne is the SSI’s new Project Manager, who will taking over the reins as the SSI leaves the Forum for the Future nest to become independent charity in September 2013 – exciting times indeed!
